Messy Characters and Breadcrumb Trails: Engaging Audiences with Revelations
Sat 5:00 PM - Sat 7:00 PM: 46 tickets, $20 each (Official Listing)

Worried a shocking twist isn’t so shocking? Toiya Kristen Finley discusses how a key to good epiphanies is getting your audience invested in characters - and their small and large revelations.

Details

Timing:
Sat 5:00 PM - Sat 7:00 PM
Location:
Marriott / Marriott Ballroom 3
Long Description:
Plotting hints and clues is about more than leaving cool things for audiences to connect to larger revelations. When audiences connect to characters, they’re more likely to be invested in finding clues that engage their imaginations and show them things about the world, characters, and plot. In order to deepen the audiences’ commitment and investment, writers can create “messy” characters where players will care about and their arcs where the audience will discover plot-related revelations. In effect, writers create a “revelatory” breadcrumb language to signal where the audience can look for clues. This will feature exercises, and writers are encouraged to bring WIPs (fiction, comics, or games) or notes for projects they’re working on.
